Philosophers throughout time have attempted to address the
issues of duty and virtue. Few, however, have included
these concepts within the realm of legal and political
reasoning in the manner that Cicero and Machiavelli
have done. Cixcero’s On Duties and Machiavelli’s
The Prince are both readings within social and political
philosophy. This 10 page paper argues that Cicero’s
concept of duty is in opposition to virtue for Machiavelli
in his discussion of government. In both instances, the
successful organization of government depends on the
willingness of it’s leaders to commit to ‘virtuous’
